One of the Nation’s Newest National Monument – Chimney Rock
Chimney Rock is quite a geological site. The chimney reaches an elevation of 7687 feet above sea level. Located 50 miles east of Durango on Rt #160 east, or 20 miles west of Pogosa Springs on east # 160 it is an easy location to find.
Finally we are recognizing Chimney Rock for its importance to the ancient puebloen’s society that inhabited this region. Long before this continent was known as North America. The mystery of who were the 1200 to 2000 Anasazi Indians that occupied this site, as far back as 35,000 years ago. This society possessed the knowledge to farm, hunt, and build. Some speculate this as. With a knowledge of the lunar calendar and evidence of a natural lunar observatory.
