Dreams
Life does not stop. Believe this and you will find your way.
Our society has the largest portion of its population moving into retirement age, of which I am one. As I reached the age of deciding what was next. A small ranch or farm was my way. Living on the east coast at the time, I looked around and knowing I could not afford what I had dreamt of where I was.
Having lived and commuted on the eastern slope of Colorado. I started in south eastern Colorado where land was still inexpensive and soon broadened my search to the western slope of Colorado.
My priorities called for reasonably priced land, good water, irrigation water, and reasonable winters. Oh and a college to bring in culture and young ideas. Durango, Colorado was all that, and it has tourism and several small industries to keep opportunities flowing.
My number one priority, for me, myself, whatever I did, stay reasonably fit, don’t sit still and let the moss grow under your feet. Doing outdoor activities always helps with ones physique whether it’s gardening, hiking, fishing, skiing or snowshoing.
Physical labor is my secret health club. Doing fencing and feeding the animals, irrigating, digging ditches, makes me happy, and I do alot of thinking and reflecting when doing mindless activities.
To have live stock is not easy. I watch life’s joy at the birth of a calf. The first years of life for cows and horses are as wondrous as it is for all children. I struggle when all does not go as I would want. All the time thinking of what’s next, potential problems, what are the next seasons projects, I’m living every day. Preparing and promoting life, and finding satisfaction at the end of each season.
I consider getting older as maturing, lightening up, not being so hard on oneself and forgiving yourself for mistakes. It is dropping one’s guard a little, but knowing how to be prepared for whatever might happen.
