The company sells a variety of custom Western style leather, clothing, jewelry and other items most of which are designed by Gibson himself. Gibson has been working with leather since he was 12 years old. He opened Appaloosa in Durango 30 years ago, and has been expanding the company ever since.
With a recent move to a new location in Telleride, the business is utilizing the additional space for much more than retail.
Combining retail, food service and even a bar in an expansive space on 100 Colorado W. Avenue that used to house the Llama restaurant and bar, Appaloosa’s owner Michael Gibson said he thinks he can carve a new niche into the Telluride marketplace. He said prices will be in the middle of the pack in Telluride. We are not selling burgers or baked stuff at night, kind of in the middle, Young said.We are going to have some [wild] game stuff, we’re going to do an elk sausage during the day, and we are going to do a buffalo pot roast at night. For locals we’re doing sort of a glass of wine and a plate of food for under $20, maybe $15, depending where we re at and what we re doing. All food in the restaurant will be made fresh on site, including all salad dressings and sauces. Gibson said. “I feel we are providing something new and different for the locals with a price that’s reasonable. and also like to thank Richard Groman, who owns the building because he really helped us out a lot”.
