A 53-year-old township resident was charged with burglary and theft after State Police circulated photos captured on a homeowner's deer camera.

The man wore gloves and a hat, but did nothing to shield his face from view. State Police Sgt. Jeff Flynn said a number of people called to help identify Michael Walen as the suspected thief after the deer cam photos were posted on May 4, including one of a man carrying a sink missing from the Elliot Laidlaw III residence.

The burglary and theft were discovered on April 30. Also taken were bird baths and an aluminum ladder.

Walen was arrested at a friend's home in the township on May 7 after a follow-up investigation, State Police reported, in which Walen was also linked to thefts at the Laidlaw residence in January.

One item taken in the winter was a cast iron wood-burning stove, said Flynn, from a workshop on the property.

The thefts remain under investigation. Flynn said Walen wasn't a contractor, nor did he have permission to be on the property.

Flynn called the arrest "outstanding work by all involved" and "another great example of our communities working together with our troopers for a common good!"

In addition to burglary, Whalen was charged with multiple counts of theft and criminal trespass. He was taken to the county jail, with bail set at $5,000 cash.

In 2013, three Somerset residents were arrested in Warren County and charged with burglarizing 66 cars in northwestern Hunterdon County.

Police caught a break, they said, when a Milford victim released footage of the apparent thieves, taken on a deer cam.
