Mira Ranch Sponsors Girl Scouts Media Day

It’s so important for us to learn to communicate with the world. From a young age we learn how to write; however,  today’s world is filled with media on TV and on the Internet, yet we have less access to learn how to communicate through this medium. So Girl Scouts decided to host a Media Retreat, for girls’ from 4th-8th grade. The girls looked for the “ME” in media and learned how they can shape media. The girls also learned how girls/women are portrayed in the media, which is often misleading.  At the retreat girls got to create their own ads on camera and got to produce their own Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) to tell stories of themselves, their community, and world. The Girl Scouts asked for help from Bliss Bruen and Tony Corona who are warm and patient instructors. As a bonus, the girl’s also got to use professional media equipment.

For an entire school day, the group learned the basics of producing a PSA. They learned many practical skills like using a camera, editing a scene, writing out a plot/storyline, and acting. The girls quickly erupted in giggles and smiles as they began to produce their own PSA’s, acting and watching your friends act—can lead to lots of laughter.

Not only was the session about teaching girls Media production, but it also helped the girls’ build self-confidence, improve their leadership skills, and enhance their storytelling skills. The girls were also coming up with statements such as: “I am a girl and I’m not afraid of much” or “I am beautiful, because I am smart.”  The girls were very proud of their final PSA’s and will be looking forward to sharing them with the community.
